Tiyatro KALE and Mahmud Yesari at Caddebostan Cultural Centre: Arkadaşım Karım Olunca

Watching meticulously orchestrated lives collapse like a house of cards under the weight of a single fib remains one of the stage’s oldest and most delightful spectacles. Staged by Tiyatro KALE, Arkadaşım Karım Olunca (When My Friend Became My Wife)—a work drawn from the legacy of Turkish literary and theatrical master Mahmud Yesari—arrives at the Caddebostan Cultural Centre (CKM) stage on the evening of 24 October 2026, driven by the relentless tempo and escalating stakes of classic two-act vaudeville.

At the narrative’s centre is Bülent, an attorney whose affairs appear impeccably sorted from the outside. Living comfortably thanks to generous financial allowances from his wealthy aunt in Egypt, his only impediment is her non-negotiable prerequisite: marriage. Yet when the aunt suddenly arrives on his doorstep, the delicate chain of white lies begins to fracture. Ignited in a moment of sheer desperation when his best friend steps into the role of “wife,” the ensuing mayhem swiftly spirals into a full-blown war of nerves, propelled by a steady influx of uninvited guests, compounding misunderstandings, and the incessant clamour of slamming doors.

Rather than taking refuge in cheap comedic clichés and canned gags, the play draws its strength from confronting the all-too-familiar helplessness of human nature. As the stage tempo accelerates, the characters’ cornered desperation prompts not just laughter, but an unspoken, visceral question in the audience: “How would I untangle myself from such a knot?” The dilemma—whether it is more taxing to confess the truth or sustain an untruth that has slipped completely out of hand—merges seamlessly with vaudeville’s unflagging momentum.

Directed by Kayhan Kaban, the staging is co-helmed by associate directors Ümit Gözcüoğlu, Ahmet Deveci, and Onat Turgut. Mahmut Vardal’s set design carves out ample room for the genre’s perpetual motion, while Günay Alioğlu’s poster design captures the production’s visual vibrancy. On stage, Kaban takes on the role of Hüsnü alongside Emre Sarı as Bülent. Rounding out the spirited ensemble cast are Yeşim Nehir (the Aunt), Mustafa Kıran (Tokmak Cevdet), Oğuz Nurettin Badem (Rıfkı), Zeynep İlkcan Gözcüoğlu (Feride), Mercan Fisdiş (Nazlı), and Nalan Akıncı (Necla).

Presented with the support of Altier Education Group, the production stands as one of the season’s notable fixtures for those looking to leave behind the week’s weariness with an accomplished parlour comedy. Staged at Caddebostan Cultural Centre on Saturday, 24 October at 20:00, tickets for this two-act comedic impasse are available via Biletinial.
