A Contemporary Refraction in Vermeer’s Light: Elise Ansel’s New Exhibition

Picture Johannes Vermeer’s celebrated, timeless luminescence: that soft, enigmatic beam filtering through a narrow window, settling quietly across a woman’s face, and spilling onto a wooden table. American artist Elise Ansel seizes upon these quiet tableaux etched into art-historical memory, transposing them into a contemporary visual register through her dynamic, gestural brushwork.

Ansel’s ongoing practice of reimagining the world of the Old Masters in a contemporary idiom gains further depth with her latest exhibition at London’s Cadogan Gallery. Marking the gallery’s ninth solo presentation with the artist, wall window table light runs from 14 October to 14 November 2026.

In this new body of work, Ansel turns her lens squarely toward Vermeer’s female figures, suspended and bathed beside windows. Yet rather than acting as a passive conduit of the past, she poses fresh inquiries grounded in perception, illumination, and the raw materiality of pigment. On Ansel’s canvases, the static geometry of classical painting dissolves into a kinetic flux of colour, simultaneously fracturing and reassembling space and light.

The exhibition’s title, wall window table light, pays subtle homage to an age-old tension inherent to painting itself: the rift between the early modern conception of the canvas as an illusionistic window opening onto another world, and the modernist and contemporary insistence on the work as a self-contained, flat, concrete object hanging upon a wall. Ansel invites the viewer into a poetic threshold suspended precisely between the illusory depth of the window and the physical immediacy of the wall, inhabiting the productive friction between these two poles.

Intertwining the visual lexicons of past and present, the exhibition delivers an immersive encounter wherein light and paint emerge as protagonists in their own right across the canvas.
