Harvey Fierstein is set to receive a distinguished honor at the 2025 Tony Awards.

On Thursday, the Tony Awards Administration Committee shared the exciting news that Fierstein will be awarded the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre during the ceremony on June 8.

“Harvey Fierstein’s impact on American theatre, both as a creative force and an activist, is truly remarkable,” said Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, along with Jason Laks, president of the Broadway League, in a joint statement. “We are excited to celebrate his legacy with this year’s Lifetime Achievement in Theatre Award at the Tony Awards.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Fierstein has garnered four Tony Awards. He won Best Play and Best Actor in a Play for his groundbreaking work in Torch Song Trilogy in 1983, followed by the award for Best Book of a Musical for La Cage Aux Folles in 1984. In 2003, he was honored with Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray, a part he reprised for the Hairspray Live! special in 2016.

Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award include luminaries like Carol Channing, James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The 2025 Tony Awards will be hosted by Cynthia Erivo and take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Nominations will be announced on May 1.
