Through October 24, 2026, Galerie Peter Kilchmann in Zurich plays host to Renaissance Paintings Reloaded, a solo exhibition by Swiss artist Andy Denzler—one of the most compelling and original voices in contemporary painting. Functioning as a continuation of his recent Spectral Paintings series, this new selection translates the enduring compositions of Renaissance masters such as Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese into a dynamic visual lexicon filtered through the lens of modern memory.
Rather than treating historical masterpieces as static images frozen on museum walls, Denzler approaches them as vital components of a living, timeless visual archive. Overlaid layers of paint, expressive brushwork, and his signature horizontal freeze-blur technique pull figures into the depths of abstraction at the very instant they achieve clarity. Light, shadow, and the human form of classical painting dissolve across Denzler’s canvases like time slipping in a momentary tremor, offering the viewer a distinctly cinematic visual spectacle.
Comprising large- and medium-scale canvases alongside works on paper, the exhibition establishes a captivating dialogue between past and present through works such as Firmament (After Tintoretto), Hybris 2 (After Titian), Prometheus 1 (After Titian), and Water, Spirit, Light (After Veronese). The delicate balance between resolution and dissolution on the surface underscores the layered complexity of collective memory and the endurance of the image. We look forward to standing before these canvases and experiencing this layered tempest of color and the temporal rhythm of the paint firsthand.
