We Experienced Jeppe Hein’s “YOU ARE NEVER REALLY ALLONE” Exhibition at KÖNIG GALERIE!

When we stepped into the colossal nave space of St. Agnes Church—one of Berlin’s iconic brutalist architectures—a sense of wonder far removed from traditional gallery experiences welcomed us. Displayed since June 5 in KÖNIG GALERIE’s soaring, high-ceilinged space and running until August 23, 2026, Jeppe Hein’s exhibition “YOU ARE NEVER REALLY ALLONE” places the viewer directly at the center of the space and experience. Visiting this exhibition near its end, it proves with striking elegance how simple forms can radically transform perception.

Magical Penguins Descending From Ceiling to Floor

Known for his interactive and experiential art practices, Danish artist Jeppe Hein reimagines his iconic “mirror balloon” sculptures in a brand-new form for this exhibition. Giving the impression of descending from the ceiling down to the floor, the artist’s penguin figures are covered in highly polished mirror surfaces. These mirrored surfaces reflect both St. Agnes’ brutalist architecture and the viewer’s own body, bending and transforming them. Transforming from abstract volumes into bodies oscillating between weight and weightlessness, these figures look as if they have drifted in from another world to take refuge inside this historic church.

Each sculpture takes its name from penguin habitats such as Chile, Argentina, Peru, South Africa, Namibia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Galápagos Islands. However, these names are chosen from local/indigenous languages—words referencing care, guidance, nature, and the concept of “being here.” Furthermore, each penguin figure rests on a pale-colored natural stone individually collected by the artist from the shores of Denmark. Creating a still moment where the penguins pause to rest and quietly observe their surroundings, this setup invites the viewer to look around with the same attentiveness and slowness.

“ALLONE”: Individuality and Collective Consciousness

The word “ALLONE” in the exhibition’s title—deliberately combining the words “ALL” and “ONE”—reminds us that individuality and collective consciousness exist simultaneously. It points to a shared state of existence where all human and non-human life forms are continuously reflected in one another.

Thanks to the mirrored surfaces, perception never remains static. With your every movement, perspective, and step within the space, the artwork continuously reshapes itself. Your body and the surrounding architecture become part of the work. These subtle shifts in perspective continually reconstruct the relationship between the viewer, sculpture, and environment, offering a deeper, connected way of seeing nature and the world around us.
