As the rush of midnight subsides and the clock strikes four in the morning, a single question surfaces: “Who are you?”
This fundamental inquiry driving Seldem Kargı’s practice takes root long before canvas meets brush—germinating in those fragile moments when our sense of belonging begins to fracture. The person standing beside us, a houseplant growing quietly on a windowsill, a sudden flash of thought, or two simple lines rendered on paper: how much of this truly belongs to us? Do the things we claim as our own retain their meaning when viewed through another’s gaze?
Amid the cadence of daily life, intruding daydreams guide Kargı’s brush, giving birth onto the canvas to bodies that seem unmoored from this world. Yet the process does not conclude there; the moment a figure materializes, the artist stands before her creation to confront it once more: Who are you? Emerging from her inner realm only to distance themselves as they take shape, these figures transform artistic production from passive representation into a dynamic encounter—a space where artist and image measure one another.
Rather than asserting definitive conclusions, Kargı’s canvases oscillate along the delicate line between ownership and distance, subject and reflection. In this uncanny terrain between the familiar and the foreign, the question of image ownership spills beyond the edges of the canvas and permeates the gallery space. Within this universe, no image remains the property of a single gaze; it is continually reconstructed through every new eye that meets it.
This quiet reckoning between Kargı and her figures ultimately invites viewers to interrogate the boundaries of their own sense of belonging.
