A solitary figure stepping into still water in pitch darkness, children playing Uno on a porch under the faint beam of a headlamp, or a young child staring directly out at us while wearing a broken crown—stepping into Aron Wiesenfeld’s canvases drops the viewer into the unresolved middle of an unwritten story. The artist’s oil paintings cultivate a whispered sense of curiosity that seeps softly through the dark.
Wiesenfeld’s compositions unfold predominantly at dusk or in the deepening hours of night. As the background gradually dissolves into shadow, an originless light source throws the figures into focus. Yet these scenes bear no trace of fear or peril; instead, what emerges is a quiet, serene acceptance, akin to waking mid-dream. The characters are either absorbed in a gaze directed just beyond the frame or setting off toward misty, unseen landscapes.
The ambiguous glow illuminating a mother and child in Transfer, the whispered exchanges playing out in the background of Reunion, or the still waters of Limbo—each functions as an open-ended visual sequence whose conclusion is entrusted to the viewer’s own memory and imagination. Wiesenfeld excels at capturing those brief, quiet moments of contact lingering on the threshold between humanity and nature, childhood and adulthood.
This mastery of visual narrative has naturally led the artist to a long-gestating graphic novel project. Eagerly anticipated by readers, the work has been released in France under the title La Fuite, and is slated for an English release next year under the title Runoff via Image Comics.
