The Burgas International Film Festival, held for the 11th time this year in Bulgaria, emphasized exactly this power in its closing message. And the biggest winner of this meaningful night was “Cinema Jazireh”, the second feature film written and directed by Gözde Kural, with its courageous narrative and staggering story delving into the deepest parts of the human soul. Garnering great appreciation from the jury with its strong cinematic language and impressive atmosphere, the production returned from the festival with the “Best Film” award, crowning its success in the international arena once again.
Gözde Kural, who attracted attention with her debut film “Toz” (Dust), turns her camera in her new film to Afghanistan under Taliban oppression and a mother’s heartbreaking struggle for survival. The film centers on the peril-filled journey of Leyla, who lost her family in a ruthless attack, as she sets out to find her missing son. In this geography where even existing as a woman is considered a threat in itself, Leyla is forced to disguise herself as a man in order to cross borders and track down her son. The character of Leyla, brought to life by one of the shining stars of Iranian cinema, Fereshteh Hosseini, brings to the screen not only a physical transformation but also that universal resistance and spiritual metamorphosis a woman puts up independently of geography, through a tremendous acting performance.
While Leyla, whose paths cross with different characters throughout her journey, is torn between continuing to search for her son as time runs out and heeding a brand-new calling; “Cinema Jazireh” draws the audience into a moral and conscientious dilemma as well. Accompanied in the cast by strong names such as Mazlum Sümer, Ali Karimi, Hamid Karimi, and Reza Akhlaghirad alongside Fereshteh Hosseini, this co-production of Türkiye, Iran, Bulgaria, and Romania also offers a visual feast with the delicate framing of cinematographer Adib Sobhani.
Having made its world premiere at the prestigious 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and left there with the Ecumenical Jury Award, the film has been traveling the world without slowing down ever since. Embracing the Best Asian Film at Kerala, Best Director at the 40th Mostra de Valencia, and Most Promising Young Actor at the 32nd International Adana Golden Boll Film Festival, “Cinema Jazireh” has proven its assertiveness in its festival journey with this latest grand prize it received from Burgas.
