Art Raising Its Voice Against Right-Wing Normalization: “KUNST GEGEN RECHTS” at Berlin’s Alte Feuerwache

Against rising far-right politics, racism, anti-Semitism, and queerphobia across Germany and Europe, the contemporary art scene prepares to give its clearest answer once again. Setting out with the motto “Art does not participate! Art raises the alarm! Art intervenes!”, the exhibition series “KUNST GEGEN RECHTS” (Art Against the Right) meets art lovers for the first time in a municipal public gallery with its new edition.

Curated by Anne Mundo and Dirk Teschner, the official opening of the exhibition takes place on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 19:00, while the exhibition can be visited free of charge at Projektraum Alte Feuerwache in Friedrichshain between August 6 and September 20, 2026.

A Free Space Opening to Democracy: The Exhibition’s Past and Meaning

The first exhibition of the “KUNST GEGEN RECHTS” project was organized in 2017 at Berlin Uferhallen before the Federal Parliament elections. From that period, when a far-right party entered the German parliament for the first time since the 1960s, to the present day, the project has created a free space for discussion nourishing social dialogue across 12 different project spaces in various German cities and Vienna.

This edition of the exhibition has critical timing just before the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to data from the Berlin Register (Berliner Register), a historic record was set in 2025 with 8,286 far-right and discriminatory incidents in the city. Standing against the historical legacy of racist violence extending to Rostock, Hoyerswerda, Solingen, NSU murders, Halle, and Hanau, the exhibition defends the polyphonic structure of post-migration society, artistic diversity, and democratic solidarity.

On the opening night, following the welcome speech by Kerstin Ottersberg and a presentation by art critic Carsten Probst, artist Finja Sander will perform a special live performance.

Side events taking place within Alte Feuerwache throughout the exhibition aim to enhance thematic depth:

Wednesday, August 26 (19:00 – Studiobühne): Screening of the 2024 film OTHER TONGUE by Noa Gur, in which AI-powered bots turn disinformation networks on X and Instagram into an absurd theater play.
Wednesday, September 2 (18:00): ARTIST TALK with curator and artist Anne Mundo, focusing on Ursula Hirschmann’s anti-fascist legacy and developing personal resilience through drawing.
Wednesday, September 9 (19:00): BLACK LIVES AUDIO TRIPTYCH talk with the participation of Ina Wudtke and Kofie Boachie, addressing the history of Black anti-racist struggle in Germany from the Weimar Republic to the present.
Sunday, September 20 (16:00 – Finissage): Exhibition tour guided by curators and artists. At 17:30, an interdisciplinary space-sound performance and collective catharsis ritual by Shin Hyo Jin and Otto Oscar Hernández Ruiz.
