For those following contemporary painting, the name Michael Krebber represents not just a painter but an entire school—through his stance, his teaching (at Städelschule), and his inclusion of even “not painting” as part of painting.
In his ninth solo exhibition at Galerie Buchholz since 1997, the artist this time turns toward the past. “Angeldust” brings together Krebber’s early sculptures, paintings, and works on paper produced between 1976 and 1993.
The exhibition’s title is highly significant. “Angeldust” comes from a text Krebber wrote in 1987—a kind of “rant” about the early works of Italian artist Piero Manzoni.
Curated in collaboration with Michael Sanchez, author of the artist’s catalogue raisonné, this exhibition delves into the foundations of Krebber’s artistic practice. It reveals not only his individual works but also the dialogues (collaborations) with other artists that shaped his career.
Throughout his career, spanning from Cologne to New York, Krebber has always asked—and prompted others to ask—“What is painting?” This exhibition is a journey back to the rawest, youngest, and perhaps most angry period of those questions.
