Wednesday: A Recap of Season One and Our Unanswered Questions

August 1, 20254 min read

Neighbor, would you like me to read the news to you?

As we prepare for the return of the seriously spooky Wednesday Addams on our screens, it’s a great time to revisit the events of the first season.

Jenna Ortega’s iconic portrayal of Wednesday has captivated audiences worldwide since the series premiered nearly three years ago, turning it into one of Netflix’s most-watched shows ever. However, given the time that’s passed, it’s understandable if some details have faded from memory. What we really need is a refresher on what went down in season one, along with the lingering questions we still want answers to from that explosive finale.

A Quick Recap of Season One

The season kicks off with Wednesday being expelled from yet another school, prompting her parents, Morticia and Gomez, to send her to Nevermore Academy, a haven for paranormal teens.

At Nevermore, she meets her roommate, Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), and is quickly drawn into a mystery involving a monstrous creature targeting students. Not long after starting, Wednesday finds herself nearly killed by Rowan, a fellow student, who mysteriously reappears the next day after his gruesome demise. It turns out, the school’s Principal, Larissa Weems, has shapeshifting abilities.

As the storyline unfolds, we learn about a dark history at Nevermore: Wednesday’s father, Gomez, was accused of murdering a student named Garrett Gates—though it was actually Morticia who killed him. Garrett was a relative of Joseph Crackstone, a radical who sought the extermination of paranormal beings, including Wednesday’s ancestor, Goody Addams.

Garrett’s sister, Laurel, becomes a teacher at Nevermore, seemingly intent on avenging her brother. Her vengeance leads to a series of chilling attacks at the school, with Wednesday discovering that the creature tormenting their community is a Hyde—a cursed being that transforms into a monstrous version of itself under emotional duress.

After a rollercoaster of revelations, Wednesday learns that Tyler, her romantic interest and a son of the local sheriff, is the Hyde she’s been hunting. In a shocking twist, Laurel manipulates Tyler to help her enact revenge by attacking students to collect body parts for her resurrection spell to bring back Crackstone.

In the season finale, Wednesday orchestrates an elaborate plan to expose Laurel’s atrocities, but in the process, Principal Weems is killed, and Wednesday is captured. A thrilling climax sees Wednesday and Enid triumph over Laurel, thwarting the resurrection and saving Nevermore.

In the end, Wednesday is welcomed back to Nevermore, but don’t let that give you too much comfort—there are more mysteries afoot.

What Questions Remain Unanswered?

In the series’ closing moments, we witness Wednesday, who has always been wary of technology, receiving her very first mobile phone. This choice quickly proves questionable as she starts receiving ominous texts from an unknown number expressing, “I’m watching you,” and sending photos of her with friends and Tyler, who is now incarcerated.

The identity of this mysterious texter, along with Tyler’s fate, remain unsolved mysteries. Fortunately, we’ll soon have the chance to discover the answers.

Wednesday Season 2 premieres on Netflix on August 6!
