The Texture of Identity: A Journey into a “Diaspora Wonderland” in Berlin

As spring winds blow through the streets of Berlin’s Linienstraße, ifa Gallery Berlin invites us to see fashion not merely as a matter of clothing, but as the most sensitive seismograph of identity, gender and roots. Opening its doors in just a few days on 27 March, the exhibition “Diaspora Wonderland – Fashioning Worlds” offers a profound look into the magical and multi-layered worlds created by diasporic experiences.

The exhibition centres on how fashion externalises the intimate relationship we establish with body, time and space. Curated by Lotfi Aoulad, the artists Buki Akomolafe, Margaux Derhy, Sophia Kacimi, Sarah Makharine and Nix redefine wonderland through a wide spectrum ranging from textiles to sound, from photography to sculptural garments. Here, fashion appears not just as a piece of fabric, but as a field of narrative and transmission shaped by movement, migration and collective memory.

The craftsmanship, aesthetics and circulation of knowledge within diasporic communities enter into a dynamic dialogue with Berlin’s local fashion scene and creative industries through this exhibition. The artists’ works make visible how the hybrid identities brought about by belonging and movement construct new “wonderlands”. From Buki Akomolafe’s sketches to Nix’s visual narratives, every piece serves as evidence of that creative act in which we declare to the world who we are.

This visual feast, which will run until 7 June, reflects the pluralistic perspective of ifa Gallery, whose mission is to bring global entanglements together in new narrative forms. The gallery, which offers free admission, stays open late especially on Thursday evenings, providing art lovers with an extended viewing opportunity.

What do you say to turning your Berlin route towards Linienstraße this weekend to discover that fashion is not just a trend, but a form of resistance and existence?
