The Streets Will Fill with Rhythm, Hearts Will Beat as One: We Can’t Wait for Notting Hill Carnival in Its 60th Year!

With the arrival of August, we are counting down the days with immense excitement—just like every year—for that enchanting rhythm, the aroma of fresh jerk chicken, and the dazzling explosion of colors about to engulf the streets of West London! As Europe’s largest street festival and the second-largest carnival in the world after Rio, Notting Hill Carnival is preparing to celebrate a truly historic moment in 2026.

A symbol of Caribbean culture, music, and community spirit, this magnificent gathering is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, transforming into an even more exuberant and grand spectacle than ever before. With roots dating back to 1966 (and even earlier, to Claudia Jones’s solidarity efforts organized in response to the racist riots and hostility faced by the Windrush Generation), the Carnival has continued to be London’s most liberating and inclusive voice for 60 years.

Mark Your Calendars: When, Where, and How Will It Happen?

Coinciding with the bank holiday weekend this year, the Carnival excitement will turn the streets of West London entirely pedestrian-only from August 29 to August 31, 2026. Here is the step-by-step breakdown of this unforgettable multi-day itinerary:

Saturday, August 29 (16:00 – 23:00): Serving as the Carnival’s warm-up, the ticketed UK National Panorama Steelband Competition will take place at Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park near Trellick Tower. A fantastic warm-up awaits us with Caribbean rhythms and massive 10-minute performances played completely by memory without sheet music.

Sunday, August 30 (Family Day – From 06:00 AM): As the sun rises at 06:00 AM, the streets will awaken to steel bands and African drums with the famous J’Ouvert procession on Ladbroke Grove. Following the official opening at 10:00 AM, the children’s parade featuring kids dancing in amazing costumes will begin, alongside fun processions filled with flying paint and colorful powders. From midday onwards, sound systems will take over the streets.

Monday, August 31 (Main Parade – From 10:30 AM): The bank holiday Monday is the Carnival’s biggest and most grand day! Starting at 10:30 AM, the main parade will deliver an absolute explosion of excitement with magnificently costumed Mas bands, over 40 massive sound systems, and live stages.

Important Moment of Remembrance: At 3:00 PM on both Sunday and Monday, a deep 72-second silence will be observed in memory of the 72 lives lost in the Grenfell Tower fire, as well as Kelso Cochrane, whose tragic death in a racially motivated murder in 1959 sparked the birth of the Carnival.

Essential Tips for Carnival Attendees!

Attending this massive street party centered in Notting Hill and spreading to Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park, Westbourne Grove, and Bayswater—as well as watching the parades and sharing in the excitement—is completely free. However, to ensure you have a fantastic time amidst the atmosphere visited by 2 million people, here are a few golden rules to keep in mind:

Forget Meetups, Go with the Flow: Phone networks may drop due to the massive crowds. Don’t waste time trying to meet up with friends right in the middle of the Carnival area; set your meeting point well outside the grounds. The most magical moments happen when you stumble upon heavy bass beats blasting from a makeshift sound system in a side street—so don’t stick too strictly to your map and just live in the moment!

Transport and Preparation: TfL Tube lines (Queensway, Notting Hill Gate, Westbourne Park, etc.) may experience temporary station closures due to overcrowding, so be prepared to walk and use alternative routes. Wear comfortable shoes, and carry both cash and card (card machines might fail if network signals drop).

Caribbean Flavors and Water: Don’t leave without sampling the famous jerk chicken, curry goat, or vegetarian Caribbean dishes offered across more than 300 stalls. There will also be 4 free drinking water points on-site located on Alderson Street, Kensington Park Road, and Shrewsbury Road.
