We are turning our course away from Europe’s rainy capitals and New York’s vast museums once again toward the shining art destination of the East: Hong Kong. VILLEPIN is opening its doors to the captivating and serene world of Ted Gahl, one of the most striking painters of his generation.
The exhibition titled “Roam”, which began on 25 March and will continue until 7 May 2026, captures those rare, suspended moments where memories transform into images, and images dissolve into pure emotion.
External Landscapes of an Inner World
Ted Gahl’s paintings offer an atmosphere that is both deeply personal and universally familiar. The exhibition title “Roam” represents not only physical wandering, but the quiet journey undertaken between the mind, memories, and emotions.
Witnessing Gahl’s practice reminds us how we move through life: as everything around us blurs and takes new form, we carry our inner world with us through these changing landscapes. The painter invites us to discover, on these canvases, how we can remain grounded within this flow while tracing the marks of our own journey.
A Personal Collector’s Story
Behind the exhibition lies the deep and intimate bond between the gallery’s founder, Arthur Villepin, and the artist. Villepin expresses his admiration for Gahl’s world with these words:
“I included Ted’s first work in my collection in 2021, when Villepin was still a very young gallery. At the time I didn’t know him personally, but I had already fallen in love with his world. As I lived with this universe that drew me in without a single word spoken, I felt its quiet power more deeply. After our group exhibition in 2024, it is now an honour for me to dedicate a full solo exhibition to Ted.”
Why You Should See It
Ted Gahl’s works possess a quietly arresting power. If, in a rapidly changing world, you want to pause for a moment, listen to your inner voice, and recognise the colours and forms of your own memories on a stranger’s canvas, then “Roam” is the perfect stop for you.
