Stirrings Beneath the Surface: ‘UNSEEN’ at Hondor Art Gallery

Crossing the threshold of Hondor Art Gallery, stepping away from the restless urban grain of Beşiktaş, the city’s exterior din yields to an austere, inquisitive twilight. Running from 14 October to 14 November 2026, UNSEEN takes up the quiet premise whispered across its exhibition billing: “What remains beneath the surface also moves.”

Unfolding layer by layer the silent negotiation one conducts with one’s own existence, the exhibition maps an inward trajectory through four distinct stations—tracing a line from dream state to awakening, and from world-apprehension to the outer limits of consciousness.

A Memory Yet Unnamed: The Unseen Self

The journey’s opening station leads into a dreamlike suspension, where the mind is not yet woven through language and the contours of the external world remain unresolved. Imbued with the rawness of an incipient gaze, memory, flesh, the subconscious, and primal affects bleed into one another. Here lies an abstract threshold where neither the self nor its surrounding environment can be fully demarcated—only felt. Stripping the viewer of the deadweight of familiar taxonomies, the exhibition leaves one alone with intuitions not yet named: Look within.

Fractures and Confrontation: The Unseen Within

The second phase begins precisely where sleep breaks and the abrasive surface of lived reality grazes the skin. The vicissitudes of the everyday, deepening entanglements, loss, desire, and inescapable internal frictions—these cumulative residues hairline-fracture the ego’s protective shell, compelling an unflinching confrontation with one’s interiority. Identity ceases to function as a prefabricated mould and splinters; yet rather than bruising the subject, internal conflict is recast as an unsparing mirror, drawing one steadily back toward essence: Turn inward.

The Widening Arc: The Unseen Beyond

Once consciousness begins to discern its own inner register, its inexorable next step is to cast its gaze outward—toward the other and the world at large. In this third stratum, the perspective expands precipitously. The subject contends with nature, the temporal current, society, and the visible and invisible apparatuses enclosing everyday existence. The inquiry no longer hinges solely on personal boundaries; it evolves into an effort to decode systemic frameworks, technology, and collective memory: Look upon the world.

The Threshold of Dissolution: Shadows

In the exhibition’s final act, accumulated experience, friction, and gathered awareness converge onto an altered plane. In a space where light and shadow dissolve into one another, and where the void emerges not as lack but as a condition of infinity, the act of seeing gives way entirely to intuition; the hubris of knowing surrenders to raw perception. As the rigid boundaries of the self disintegrate, only the muted resonance of being remains: Pass beyond.

The multidisciplinary visual idioms of Barış Köksal, Dicle Çiftçi, Elif Su Yıldız, Elifko, Eyüp Can Yeter, Gazi Sansoy, Güneş Çağlarcan, Hülya Sözer, Merve Yüzügüllüler, and Yağmur Yılan prevent this four-part curation from stiffening into didactic illustration, rendering it instead as a polyphonic narrative. Rather than completing one another’s sentences, the frames and forms multiply questions in the viewer’s mind—conjuring, much like the gallery’s lengthening shadows, an acute awareness of the clandestine momentum stirring just behind the visible.

UNSEEN is not an exhibition to be metabolized at the speed of modern consumption; it carves out a decelerated clearing, inviting intimate contact with the deep undercurrents coursing beneath the surface.

‘UNSEEN’ is on view at Hondor Art Gallery, Mecidiye Mahallesi, Gözlükçü Sokak, Beşiktaş, through 14 November 2026.
