Berlin’s winter atmosphere is warming up with captivating energy at 68projects by KORNFELD, where the exhibition continues until 28 February 2026. Curated by Tereza de Arruda, “Rhythm and Soul – Contemporary Brazilian Art” brings together artists from different regions and generations of Brazil to examine the concept of “rhythm” as an artistic, cultural, and political force. In this selection, rhythm is not merely an auditory element; it is positioned as an ontological energy that forms the cornerstone of identity construction, resistance, and spirituality, shaping Brazil’s dynamic social fabric and historical heritage.
The exhibition offers a highly layered narrative that intertwines Afro-diasporic and indigenous traditions, historical references, and current questions of body, territory, and belonging. Spanning artists from Francisco de Almeida to Rafael Baron, Panmela Castro to Nádia Taquary, the selection portrays Brazil as a country of contrasts: the sharp tension between joy and trauma, past and future, ritual and protest manifests in every form and color of the works. Particularly noteworthy are the graphite and colored pencil works on paper by Ehuana Yanomami and Joseca Yanomami, which carry indigenous cosmology and the ancient bond with nature straight into the heart of Berlin, deepening the exhibition’s spiritual resonance.
The technical diversity of the works reflects the richness of Brazil’s creative ecosystem. Rafael Baron’s intense oil painting in Lola Bahjan (2024) stands side by side with Samir Dams’s synthesis of photography and oil pencil in Caipora (2025), creating an interdisciplinary dialogue. The presentation of Heitor dos Prazeres’s anonymous-sounding works from the 1960s alongside contemporary productions by Mayara Ferrão or OBastardo lays bare the continuity and evolution within Brazilian art history. In a city like Berlin—shaped by musical and social movements—rhythm becomes both a mirror and an inspiring force for new perspectives, resonating far beyond national borders.
