Emerging from Melbourne’s independent circuit, Radio Free Alice tap into an immediate, sweet vein of nostalgia. Marrying the sharp, guitar-driven indie rock rhythms that dominated the early 2000s with the raw, jittery spirit of 1980s college radio, the band crafts a signature sound that registers as instantly familiar yet unmistakably vital.
Their latest single, “Big Ideas”, builds an arresting atmosphere within its opening bars through shimmering, propulsive guitar lines. The track’s real center of gravity, however, is the unforced chemistry between its vocalists: frontman Noah Learmonth is joined by Rachel Brown of Water From Your Eyes. Brown’s idiosyncratic delivery braids into Learmonth’s vocals to create the cadence of an intimate dialogue, lending the piece both cinematic weight and an agile, understated dynamism.
The genesis of the track is as candid as its sonic profile. “Big Ideas” took shape while the group was mired in creative gridlock inside their Melbourne rehearsal warehouse. Following days of unproductive writing sessions, an infectious guitar motif broke through, quickly met by a complementary bassline that provided the breath of air they had been chasing. Having imagined Brown’s vocal timbre on the track ever since catching Water From Your Eyes live in Melbourne, the ensemble appears to have realized their vision in full.
Directed by Owen Schatz, the accompanying music video captures the spontaneous, kinetic energy of the band during a trip to Los Angeles for a pop-up gig.
Having already built momentum with standout singles “Rule 31” and “Kick In The Shins”, Radio Free Alice set the bar considerably higher with this release. Their debut full-length, What’s In Between, arrives across all platforms on 30 October—shaping up to be one of the autumn’s most compelling independent releases.
