Lucinda Burgess brings the works she surrendered to the rhythm of wind, humidity, and salt during her residency at the Albers Foundation on Ireland’s Atlantic coast to art enthusiasts at London’s Bartha_contemporary. Opened on April 9 and running until May 3, 2026, the exhibition titled “Morphosis” holds a profound silence regarding the transformation of materials over time, erosion, and how these fleeting moments can be preserved. The artist positions seawater, moisture, and light not merely as external factors, but as active subjects that determine the final form of the work.
At the center of the exhibition is the work titled India Red 192 – Dissolution, which presents the viewer with a record of crystalline deposits formed by immersing brick-red paper strips into seawater. While salt residues embedded in the paper fibers freeze the delicate tension between abrasion and preservation with the help of archival silica, the ink and salt crystallizations under the Atlantic Series seal the unstable nature of the shoreline onto paper.
From the Salvage, Prison Cove drawings made on packaging waste collected from the shore to the November Colour Chart, constructed on birch plywood with a balance of matte and glossy pigments, Burgess’s practice prioritizes respect for the material’s own will. The notes etched onto weathered wooden slats found on-site, and the play of sidelight across irregular surfaces, embody the artist’s endless negotiation between intent and environmental exposure.
