Kali Theatre Unveils “Period Parrrty” at Soho Theatre

September 24, 20251 min read

Kali Theatre, in collaboration with Soho Theatre, is thrilled to announce the premiere of Gayathiri Kamalakanthan’s debut play, “Period Parrrty,” running from October 23 to November 22, 2025. This lively production offers a unique and humorous perspective on first love, queer identity, and Tamil culture. Kamalakanthan’s talent has already been recognized with a nomination for the Tony Craze Award, marking her as a rising star in British theatre.

The play’s narrative centers on 14-year-old Krish, who identifies as non-binary and faces a dilemma when their mother insists on throwing a traditional Tamil period party to mark the start of puberty. Struggling against this expectation, Krish teams up with their best friend Brenevee to transform the event into a “degendered party of their dreams.”

The talented cast features Elizabeth Green (from EastEnders) as Krish, Rani Moorthy (known for Curry Tales) as Brintha, and Tanvi Virmani (from Gigi & Dar) as Brenevee. The direction is led by Gitika Buttoo, a queer British South Asian director and former staff director at the National Theatre. The creative team also includes movement director Sundeep Saini, designer Katie Scott, and composer Niroshini Thambar, among others.

Kali Theatre, dedicated to uplifting women and non-binary writers of South Asian heritage, has spent over three decades nurturing talent and enriching the UK theatre scene with diverse narratives. “Period Parrrty” exemplifies this mission, presenting a vibrant and insightful exploration of identity, tradition, and the bravery required to embrace one’s true self.
