Why Is Squid Game Concluding with Season 3?

After four years of captivating audiences worldwide, Netflix’s Squid Game will wrap up with its third and final season.

Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, this dystopian survival series centers on a secret competition where hundreds risk their lives playing children’s games for a potentially life-altering cash prize.

The third season’s synopsis reveals: “The concluding chapter of Squid Game follows Gi-hun as he grapples with the loss of his best friend in the game and faces immense despair brought on by The Front Man, who has been concealing his real identity within the game. Gi-hun is determined to end the game, while the Front Man plots his next moves, leading to increasingly dire consequences for the remaining players with each round.”

All six episodes of season three were released on June 27, 2025.

Is Season 3 Truly the Final Season of Squid Game?

If it wasn’t clear from the promotional materials, Netflix has confirmed that the third season will indeed be the show’s last. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk referred to this season as the “finale to this story.”

“I personally see the third season as the conclusion to the tale I wanted to share about society through the character of Seong Gi-hun,” he stated. “If I ever decide to revisit the Squid Game world, it would likely focus on different characters and story arcs, possibly even exploring the lives of the masked guards—what their backgrounds are, and what they do during their downtime.”

Are There Plans for a Potential Spin-Off?

As of now, Netflix has not made any official announcements regarding additional content in the Squid Game universe. However, there have been whispers of an English-language spin-off for quite some time.

In April 2023, industry insider Jeff Sneider reported that Netflix was considering David Fincher to produce and direct an “American version of Squid Game.” Further reports mentioned that this project, tentatively titled Squid Game: America, would be penned by British writer Dennis Kelly.
