The cult story that shook the underground culture of the 1990s, etching Edinburgh’s back streets and Mark “Rent-boy” Renton’s dirty world into our minds, is now returning in a completely new form. Based on Irvine Welsh’s legendary 1996 film and novel, Trainspotting is preparing to take to the West End stage for the first time as a musical adaptation with live music on 15 July 2026. This production, which will open at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, promises to reflect the feeling of a “contemporary challenge” in the face of an uncertain future onto the stage.
What makes this adaptation more than just an ordinary “remake” is that the creator of the story, Irvine Welsh, has personally taken up his pen for this musical. Directed by Caroline Jay Ranger, the production features some tracks from the original film’s iconic soundtrack by names such as Iggy Pop, Primal Scream and Leftfield, while building its own distinct identity with entirely new music and lyrics written by Stephen McGuinness and Welsh. According to Welsh, this musical has a “bigger and louder-beating human heart” than both the book and the film.
The unforgettable role of Renton, originally played by Ewan McGregor, is now being taken on by 26-year-old Scottish actor Robbie Scott. This production, which preserves the raw energy, shocking realism and even the level of profanity that would embarrass Malcolm Tucker, positions itself far from the classic, family-friendly musicals we know. This “explosive and provocative” show, with tickets already on sale, will reunite the Trainspotting legend with today’s world.
