Upcoming Exhibitions at Capitain Petzel

Housed in its iconic glass structure on Berlin’s Karl-Marx-Allee, Capitain Petzel is preparing to enter a brand-new exhibition season as spring arrives and Gallery Weekend Berlin 2026 (May 1–3) approaches. Following the conclusion of the Georg Herold exhibition in recent weeks, the gallery is on our radar with two major solo shows spanning May and June, followed by another exciting presentation to kick off the summer.

Here are the three key stops awaiting us at Capitain Petzel in the coming weeks and summer months:

Rodney McMillian: In Other Realms

One of the most anticipated openings of Gallery Weekend Berlin is the first solo exhibition at the gallery by American artist Rodney McMillian, titled “In Other Realms.” Opening on May 1st, the exhibition brings McMillian’s unique language—which blends painting, sculpture, and installation to push the boundaries of social memory and physical space—to Berlin. This presentation, featuring works from the artist’s “In Other Realms” series, promises a profound spatial experience.

  • Dates: May 1 – June 13, 2026
  • Opening: Friday, May 1, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM (18:00–21:00)

Stefanie Heinze: Your Mouth Comes Second

Sharing the gallery space simultaneously with McMillian is Stefanie Heinze. Her exhibition, titled “Your Mouth Comes Second,” brings together new works while also hosting a book launch. Heinze’s canvases, which fluctuate between the abstract and the figurative and are woven with bodily and linguistic play, will gain further depth during a reading event and artist talk on Sunday, May 3rd.

  • Dates: May 1 – June 13, 2026
  • Event: Sunday, May 3, 12:00 PM (Reading and Talk)

Mikołaj Sobczak: History and Memory in Midsummer

Capitain Petzel’s summer calendar continues with Polish artist Mikołaj Sobczak. Following his highly acclaimed 2024 exhibition “Le Boudoir de L’Amour,” the artist returns at the end of June with new works. Sobczak is known for scenes that project historical narratives and queer identities onto the canvas with theatrical dramaturgy, confronting the viewer with a past that is both familiar and jarring. We are counting down the days to see how the intense summer light filtering through the gallery’s large windows will interact with these powerful paintings.

  • Dates: June 27 – August 1, 2026
