Major Contemporary Art Gathering at Tersane: Contemporary Istanbul 21st Edition

The eagerly anticipated highlight of Istanbul’s annual art calendar has arrived: Contemporary Istanbul opens its doors for its 21st edition at Tersane Istanbul, set against the historical skyline of the Golden Horn. Taking place from September 23 to 27, 2026, the fair stands not merely as an exhibition space, but as a compelling testament to why Istanbul remains one of the world’s most dynamic cultural capitals.

Art Within the Magic of Tersane

The choice of venue is undoubtedly one of this year’s most striking decisions. As a breathtaking complex adapted from Ottoman-era shipyards, Tersane Istanbul breathes an entirely new spirit into Contemporary Istanbul. Encountering contemporary works amidst layers of history—coming across textile installations from Asia or seven-meter monumental sculptures in a space smelling of iron, stone, and water—anchors art onto fresh ground rather than uprooting it from its context.

The Numbers Speak

The 21st edition is poised to be one of the most comprehensive gatherings in the fair’s history:

  • 70 galleries from 16 countries, including 22 first-time participants from cities such as Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and São Paulo.

  • 736 artists and 1,372 works meeting visitors.

While these statistics might appear abstract at first glance, every artwork represents a voice, every gallery a language, and every country a distinct perspective. Walking through the corridors of Tersane, one hears the artistic idioms of 16 different geographies simultaneously.

This Year’s Focus: Focus Asia

Casting its spotlight on a specific region in each edition, Contemporary Istanbul turns its focus toward Asia this year. Under the banner “Focus: Asia,” the fair brings contemporary art production spanning a vast geography—from Japan to the Gulf, South Asia to East Asia—to Istanbul. Historically and geographically, Istanbul has always served as a bridge looking toward Asia. Thus, this theme feels less like a new discovery and more like an intimate encounter between two interconnected worlds.

Unmissable Artists

The fair’s featured selection highlights inspiring artists from diverse geographies:

  • Chisato Matsumoto (Japan): Fills the soaring ceilings of Tersane with a fabric sail in her textile installation titled Sail of Light. This confluence of light and texture thoroughly transforms the industrial space.

  • Jaume Plensa (Spain): His seven-meter sculpture Juana is sited directly on the shores of the Golden Horn. Inviting yet boundary-defining with its transparent mesh structure, this figure marks one of the fair’s most indelible highlights.

  • A.A. Murakami: Their immersive installation SYMBIOSIS confronts visitors within that magical realm where technology and nature dissolve into one another.

  • Shozo Shimamoto: Works by the artist, a pioneer of Japan’s Gutai movement, offer a powerful reference point enriching the fair’s historical depth.

  • Sheikh Rashid Al Khalifa: His large-scale work Inhabited Crate embodies the rising global voice of Gulf contemporary art.

Three Distinct Programs Within a Single Fair

Contemporary Istanbul is no longer merely a fair where galleries align side by side; it has evolved into an ecosystem encompassing multiple experiences:

  • New Grounds: A dedicated section reserved for young galleries established within the last five years—the most exciting stop for discovering fresh talents yet to be claimed by the institutional art world.

  • Solo Show Selection: Monographic presentations focusing entirely on selected artists, catering to those seeking to engage with an artist’s complete universe rather than isolated works.

  • CIF Dialogues (September 23–24): Bringing key actors of the art world to the same table. Topics such as Asia’s cultural standing, collecting practices, institutional transformation, and the intersection of art and technology are debated publicly across Turkish and English sessions.

From Tersane to the Golden Horn: The Sculpture Park

One of the fair’s most distinctive facets is the sculpture park extending beyond the main building. Sprawling along the Golden Horn waterfront, 12 large-scale works merge into the city’s natural silhouette. Led by Jaume Plensa’s Juana, these works convert into an unexpected open-air art experience for Istanbulites strolling along the shore, even without a fair ticket.

Visitor and Access Information

Contemporary Istanbul places special emphasis on accessibility this year to ease its connection with the city:

  • Ferries & Shuttles: Free ferry services run to Tersane from Kadıköy, Beşiktaş, and Kabataş. Complimentary shuttles also depart from the Şişhane Metro and Halıcıoğlu Metrobüs stops.

  • Student Access: Entry is completely free for students on September 24–25 between 17:00 and 20:00.

Why This Year Holds Particular Weight

The 21st edition is far more than a symbolic number. Selecting a venue breathing with history like Tersane, reinterpreting Istanbul’s bridging identity through the “Focus Asia” theme, and opening new geographical terrain with 22 newcomer galleries all demonstrate how Contemporary Istanbul continuously reinvents itself.

Istanbul proves a fitting host for this dynamism. In how many cities worldwide could seven-meter Spanish sculptures, Japanese textile installations, and contemporary voices from the Gulf echo simultaneously inside a historic Ottoman shipyard?

Contemporary Istanbul’s 21st Edition is open to visitors at Tersane Istanbul from September 23 to 27, 2026. The opening reception takes place on September 22, with the VIP preview on September 23.
