Marking the launch of its tenth season on September 12—a traditional opening date held since its inaugural season in 2017—Istanbul Concept Gallery in Beyoğlu presents MUTE, a solo exhibition by Elena Papadimitriou. Building upon the thematic foundation of her previous series Bouche Fermée, where silence was directly embodied by the female form, Papadimitriou’s new body of work translates that stillness into the organic vernacular of nature.
In MUTE, the female figure does not fade into obscurity; instead, it morphs into ears of wheat. Swaying between fragility and unyielding strength, rooted in the earth while reaching toward the sky, these botanical forms become a potent metaphor for the female body, abundance, and the stubborn persistence of life. Standing alone or clustered against horizon lines of sea and sky, the wheat bends in the wind without breaking. Here, silence ceases to be a retreat into passivity and becomes an intentional pause—a vantage point from which to observe, endure, and gather strength.
Curated by Işık Gençoğlu, the exhibition explicitly refuses to glorify mute resignation. Rather than dwelling on the victimhood of silenced voices, MUTE frames silence as a generative threshold: a quiet space where a new voice is forged. The work grounds itself in a shared Mediterranean memory that spans opposite shores, weaving together ancestral roles, collective grief, healing rituals, and daily ties to bread, water, and soil. In doing so, it echoes the gallery’s guiding principle that “no life is superior to another,” extending an embrace to women, suppressed voices, and all who side with nature and the continuity of life.
Extending this artistic proposition into the realm of social transformation, the exhibition collaborates with the Yanındayız (We Stand by You) Association as its Social Impact Partner. By calling on men to take active responsibility in dismantling systemic gender inequality, Yanındayız mirrors the core thesis of MUTE: transforming silence into active, collective expression.
