A sequel to the acclaimed film Godzilla Minus One has been officially announced. Here’s everything you need to know.
Today (November 3), which is celebrated as Godzilla Day, Toho, the studio responsible for creating Godzilla and the kaiju universe back in 1954, revealed the exciting follow-up to the 2023 film.
While the original release was titled Godzilla Minus One, the new sequel will be called Godzilla Minus Zero. Details about the release date and plot are still under wraps.
Director Takashi Yamazaki, who played a key role in Minus One, will return to direct Minus Zero. The visual effects team at Shirogumi, recognized with an Oscar for their work on the first film, will also be back. This win made Godzilla Minus One the first Godzilla film to receive an Academy Award, and the first Japanese film to be honored for special effects.
Set just after World War II, following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Godzilla Minus One explores Japan’s struggle to regain its footing amid the chaos introduced by a towering, 164-foot radioactive beast.
Distinct from previous installments, Godzilla Minus One prioritizes the human characters’ narratives over the monster itself. This film represents the fifth entry in Toho’s Reiwa era of Godzilla, which began with Shin Godzilla in 2016 and includes an animated trilogy.
In the West, the Godzilla franchise was revitalized with the 2014 film, initiating the MonsterVerse, a cinematic universe shared with King Kong. Subsequent films include Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla Vs. Kong, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire set for release in 2024. The next installment in the series, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is anticipated in 2027, along with the Apple+ series Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters.
