Disney has officially announced that a sequel to The Simpsons Movie is on its way to theaters, scheduled for release on July 23, 2027.
By the time the sequel hits cinemas, it will have been 20 years since the iconic animated family last graced the big screen. The release date has been confirmed by Disney subsidiary 20th Century Studios.
According to Variety, this date was previously reserved for a new Marvel project, which has since been removed from the schedule. As a result, there will be no new releases in the Marvel Cinematic Universe between Avengers: Doomsday set for December 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027.
In an exciting announcement on social media, 20th Century Studios expressed, “Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming back to theaters with a brand-new movie on July 23, 2027!” The post featured a playful image of a yellow hand holding a pink donut with ‘2’ sprinkles, along with the tagline: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”
The Simpsons Movie, released in 2007, was a tremendous success, grossing over $500 million worldwide against a budget of $75 million. The film depicted the residents of Springfield trapped under a giant glass dome after Homer’s pet pig triggers an environmental catastrophe.
Discussions about a sequel have been ongoing for years. In 2015, executive producer Al Jean mentioned it was a 50/50 possibility, while four years later, show creator Matt Groening affirmed his belief that it would eventually happen “one of these days.”
In 2022, Jean shared an update, expressing that while he was enthusiastic about the sequel, he was “cautious” about fully committing due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and box office uncertainties.
In other news regarding The Simpsons, showrunner Matt Selman indicated that the upcoming season will steer clear of contemporary US politics, unlike recent seasons of South Park. He stated, “It’s not our mission to respond to the crisis of the moment. It’s more about a town of good-natured dum-dums dealing with a changing world, while our characters remain constant.”
The 37th season of the beloved sitcom premiered on Fox on September 28, with this season set to feature the show’s milestone 800th episode.
