From September 25, 2025, to January 11, 2026, the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung in Frankfurt hosts “Unzensiert: Annegret Soltau – Eine Retrospektive,” a comprehensive retrospective of one of Germany’s leading feminist artists, Annegret Soltau. This exhibition spans from the 1970s to the present, bringing together works that center on Soltau’s confrontation with her identity, body, and societal roles.
Annegret Soltau uses her art as a tool to explore themes such as identity, selfhood, and the societal pressures on the female body. Known for her photographs, videos, and drawings—often featuring her own body—Soltau creates powerful and unsettling effects by wrapping, covering, or distorting her face and body with threads. These techniques visualize how individuals are shaped, and sometimes constrained, by societal norms and expectations.
The title “Unzensiert” (Uncensored) underscores Soltau’s autobiographical and bold approach. Blending personal experiences with universal themes like motherhood, aging, and gender roles, her works invite viewers to reflect on their own bodies and perceptions. This retrospective highlights the timeless and cross-cultural relevance of Soltau’s art, demonstrating its enduring contemporaneity.
Presented within the historic and artistic ambiance of the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung, this exhibition offers a deep dive into Soltau’s artistic evolution while providing viewers an opportunity to question their own sense of self and societal positions. Don’t miss this significant retrospective!
