Southwark Playhouse proudly announces a significant revival of Dawn King’s engaging play, The Trials, running from Thursday, August 28th to Saturday, August 30th, 2025, at their Borough location. This production marks the debut of the Southwark Playhouse Young Ensemble, an exciting new theatre company featuring talented individuals aged 19 to 25 from South London.
Directed by Vicky Moran, The Trials immerses audiences in a near-future dystopia where a jury of young people judges the older generation. Their challenge: to decide who is responsible for the growing climate crisis. The play raises thought-provoking questions about the nature of justice and retribution, asking whether those most impacted by a crisis can deliver true justice or if they are simply seeking vengeance.
The cast of twelve features Anne-Elizabeth Sowah, Dominique Vincent, Emma Judge, Evie Desheva, Harry Japes, Josie Surminski, Nina Amos, Rachel Greenwood, Rowan Miller, Scarlett Molyneux, Syam Stewart, and Thea Walcott Mckay. The creative team includes Natalie Johnson for set and costume design, Will Monks for lighting and video projection, and Fergus Carver for sound design.
David Workman, Head of Participation at Southwark Playhouse, highlighted the initiative’s significance: “Southwark Playhouse is dedicated to providing young people with real opportunities to perform on our stages. The Young Ensemble represents our continued commitment to nurturing emerging talent.” The company will undergo four months of intensive training and development with theatre professionals, serving as a crucial launchpad for their performing careers.
Previously praised at the Donmar Warehouse in 2022, this revival at Southwark Playhouse aims to bring renewed urgency to its impactful themes.
