A biopic about the life and career of Snoop Dogg is gaining momentum at Universal Pictures.

The project, first announced in 2022, has Joe Robert Cole, a co-writer of Black Panther, working on the script while director Allen Hughes, known for Menace II Society and The Defiant Ones, was initially attached. Since then, updates on the film have been sparse, but Universal recently confirmed that the biopic is actively progressing.

In a new development, Craig Brewer, who directed films like Coming 2 America, Hustle & Flow, and Footloose, has been brought on to direct and is reworking some of the original script. It’s also been announced that Jonathan Daviss, known for his role in Outer Banks, will portray Snoop Dogg.

After the casting announcement, Snoop took to social media to share photos with Daviss, writing, “Let’s go nefew! It’s time!” In response, Daviss posted, “Bow wow wow.”

This announcement was made exclusively by Deadline, which also noted that Snoop Dogg, Brian Grazer, and Sara Ramaker of Death Row Pictures will be producing the film.

The biopic currently lacks a title, a supporting cast, and a production timeline. However, it is expected to explore Snoop Dogg’s rise in the hip-hop scene, though details on which aspects of his renowned career will be highlighted remain unclear.

Snoop Dogg’s most recent album, Missionary, received a three-star review from NME, with critiques pointing out its underwhelming sequel quality and questioning its sonic versatility.

As for Jonathan Daviss, he is widely recognized for his portrayal of Pope Heyward in the Netflix series Outer Banks, which has recently been renewed for a fifth and final season. He also had a substantial role in the 2022 Netflix film Do Revenge.
