In Ancient Greek, temenos refers to a sacred space completely separated from the turmoil of daily life, preparing the ground for the transition between humans and the divine. The concept’s psychological counterpart is an internal sanctuary allowing safe contact with the unconscious.

Thompson selects this concept to define both a concrete geographical space and a mental depth. The Byzantine cistern beneath Zeyrek Çinili Hamam functions as a true temenos—insulated from the outside world by its stone walls, where the rhythm of time slows down, and light and sound behave in completely different ways.

Scent and Tactility: Fragrance takes center stage in the exhibition as an unconventional art material. Working with spices, special waters, and silks sourced from Istanbul, Thompson allows the viewer to participate in the exhibition not only by looking, but by breathing.

Spatial Acoustics: The humidity of the cistern, its stone surfaces, and the silence accumulated for centuries integrate with the sound component of the installation.

500 Years of Layered Memory: From Mimar Sinan to the Byzantine Cistern

Zeyrek Çinili Hamam is one of Mimar Sinan’s 16th-century masterpieces built in Fatih. Brought back to life following a meticulous restoration process as both a historical heritage site and an experimental platform for contemporary art, the Byzantine cistern beneath the structure opens doors to much older historical layers of Istanbul. Although buildings and their intended uses change over centuries, Thompson makes the time accumulated within the space visible once again through the artistic language of the present.
