August 2026 Winds in the Berlin Art Scene: A Contemporary Art Guide from Galleries to Museums

The Berlin contemporary art scene hosts a dizzying marathon across a wide geography extending from galleries to museums, boats on the river to historical palaces. Exhibition openings, performances, artist talk sessions, and outdoor screenings keeping the rhythm of the city turn the summer season into a full-fledged art feast.

Rising Rhythm at the Beginning of August: HKW, Political Art, and Gallery Tours (August 1 – 6)

In the first days of August, the destination for experimental art was Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW). Within the scope of the ‘Bwa Kayiman: Crossing the Mangrove’ performance arts festival held on August 1–2; Camilo Mejía Cortés’s performance ‘VAIVÉN’ on Saturday, August 1, and Three Thousand Songs Records’ stage show titled ‘The First Songs’ on Sunday evening, August 2, met with the audience.

On Wednesday, August 5, Alte Feuerwache hosted the opening reception of the group exhibition ‘KUNST GEGEN RECHTS’, taking a strong stance on social issues. On Thursday, August 6, virtually an exhibition marathon took place in the city:

• SCHWARZ CONTEMPORARY: Clara Brörmann’s exhibition ‘Aureolen’ was presented with an opening reception.

• Galerie im Turm: An English exhibition tour for ‘Clouddomination’ was guided by Arvin Arta and Frances Breden.

• Gropius Bau: The night session ‘Spätschicht x AL.Berlin’ took place in collaboration with AL.Berlin.

• Kunstpunkt Berlin: The group exhibition ‘The Shape of Us’ opened its doors in its halls.

Mid-August: Bodies, Photography Retrospectives, and Dance Festival (August 7 – 16)

In the second week of August, bodily narratives and interdisciplinary projects came to the forefront. On Friday, August 7, the Georg Kolbe Museum held the opening reception of the group exhibition titled ‘everybody’, focusing on the human body and the concept of identity. On the same evening at silent green Kulturquartier, Joshua Oppenheimer’s film ‘THE END’ was screened in an outdoor cinema session alongside Bjørn Melhus’s ‘LOST IN FINITY’ exhibition.

On Thursday, August 13, at Galerie im Turm, Arvin Arta and Frances Breden met with art lovers, this time for a German exhibition tour. On the same day, the well-established international dance festival Tanz im August, spreading across different venues in the city, began; while at C/O Berlin, a special exhibition tour was guided by curator Sebastian Lux within the scope of Walter Schels’s exhibition ’16° Fische . Retrospective’. On Sunday, August 16, Gropius Bau hosted an interactive workshop titled ‘Rites of Now: Bodies and Image in Action’ for families, framed within Marina Abramović’s ‘Balkan Erotic Epic’ exhibition.

Late August: Artist Talks, Palace Tours, and Performance Closings (August 20 – 23)

Entering the final stretch of the season, the Berlin scene was enlivened with in-depth talks and closing events. On Thursday evening, August 20, at silent green Kulturquartier, Bjørn Melhus appeared before the audience with an artist talk titled ‘LOST IN FINITY – THE BEGINNING OF THE END’.

On Sunday, August 23, a rich closing program took place at various points across the city:

• Schloss Biesdorf: A curated tour of the exhibition ‘Kosmos: Agenden, Netzwerke und Freundschaften’ guided by Susanne Weiß took place.

• Haus am Waldsee: The event ‘FERIEN AM WALDSEE – Carl Laszlo und die Kunst zu überleben’, consisting of a choir concert and reading, was held alongside the ‘Wo ich wohne’ exhibition.

• silent green Kulturquartier: Bjørn Melhus concluded the exhibition marathon with his lecture performance titled ‘LOST IN FINITY – DEADLY FRUITS – From Earth Rise to Weltuntergang’.
