One of London’s most magnificent venues—often called “Britain’s Sistine Chapel”—the Painted Hall is currently hosting a captivating art experience. Peter Walker’s exhibition “Connection and Identity,” which questions human nature through light and sound, blends the historic atmosphere with a contemporary vision.
Located within the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the exhibition brings together two large-scale interactive works by Peter Walker. The artist’s aim is to make us question what makes us who we are: our identity and our connection to one another.
Identity
Eight illuminated columns hang beneath the Baroque masterpiece on the ceiling of the Painted Hall. Resembling DNA structures, these light installations constantly shift in colour and rhythm. Combining history, science, and imagination, they offer a visual meditation on who we are.
Connection
A bold and modern reinterpretation of Michelangelo’s famous “Creation of Adam.” Instead of the male hands we are accustomed to seeing in that scene, Walker uses plaster casts taken from women’s hands to reimagine hope, faith, and reason.
About the Artist: Peter Walker
Staffordshire-based sculptor Peter Walker, with more than 25 years of experience, is known for his mastery in bronze and contemporary sculpture. His works have previously been exhibited at iconic sites such as the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. This time, in the heart of Greenwich, he takes the viewer on an inner journey.
