Roland Barthes opened up a brand-new space of freedom for the reader while shaking the singular authority over the text’s meaning with his “Death of the Author” thesis. But what happens if the lens of the camera, which has been the sole authority over every photograph and every frame of image we have seen for two hundred years, is taken out of the equation? Alkan Avcıoğlu, one of the pioneering names in international AI art, confronts this very question in his first solo exhibition in Turkey, “The Death of the Camera”. In the new season where Maçka Art Gallery, one of the most established institutions in Turkish contemporary art history, celebrates its 50th anniversary, this selection—realized in collaboration with DIFOART and on view between September 15 and October 31, 2026—reckons directly with our ways of seeing and recording the world.
The 20 large-scale prints featured in the exhibition completely shatter that fixed and restricted angle the camera has maintained for nearly two centuries. Thanks to the AI models and multi-layered methods developed by Avcıoğlu, different scales, overlapping spatial relationships, and multiple perspectives coexist within the same image.
