Excitement is in the air as Excelsior Entertainment, Mercurius Theatre, and Steven M. Levy present the first production images for the world premiere of “The Daughter of Time.” This new play, adapted from Josephine Tey’s highly regarded crime novel, opens tonight at the Charing Cross Theatre and will run for a limited time until September 13, 2025. A special Gala Press Night is scheduled for July 25, coinciding with what would have been Tey’s 129th birthday.
Written by M. Kilburg Reedy and directed by Jenny Eastop, “The Daughter of Time” invites audiences into 1950s London. Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard, portrayed by Rob Pomfret, is confined to a hospital bed when he takes on a centuries-old cold case involving Richard III and the mysterious fate of the Princes in the Tower. What starts as a diversion quickly becomes an urgent quest as Grant interacts with a vibrant array of characters, including scheming Shakespearean actors, outspoken nurses, a skeptical deputy, and a lovesick American historian—all while unraveling both the historical enigma and his own feelings.
The talented cast breathes life into this colorful ensemble. Rachel Pickup stars as Marta Hallard, a glamorous actress who harbors deep feelings for Grant. Noah Huntley portrays Nigel Templeton, a refined Shakespearean actor, while Harrison Sharpe plays Brent Carradine, an earnest American researcher. The impressive lineup also includes Hafsa Abbasi and Janna Fox as Nurses Ingham and Darroll, respectively, along with Sanya Adegbola as Sergeant Williams, Grant’s lighthearted colleague.
“The Daughter of Time” reimagines Tey’s genre-defining work, which the British Crime Writers’ Association once named the greatest crime novel ever. The stage adaptation promises a captivating blend of mystery, humor, and romance, while posing profound questions about the nature of historical storytelling.
