The sequel to DreamWorks’ animated hit, The Bad Guys 2, is a delightful surprise that you can enjoy without feeling like you need protective gear. This follow-up is a noticeable upgrade, offering a faster-paced, funnier, and more laid-back experience than its predecessor. It kicks off with a thrilling car chase reminiscent of a Bond or Bourne film, set against the vibrant backdrop of Cairo as our charming team of animal outlaws pulls off another extravagant heist. At the wheel is the ever-conniving Mr. Wolf, voiced by Sam Rockwell, who delivers a Clooney-esque performance that might just earn him a royalty check.
However, the exhilarating chase is a flashback to five years ago. In the present, Mr. Wolf and his crew—Mr. Snake, Mr. Shark, and the rest—are trying to live straight, but their attempt at a clean slate is disrupted by a scheming snow leopard and accusations tied to a series of daring heists involving a precious metal dubbed MacGuffinite (a witty nod that film enthusiasts will appreciate). The fan-favorite from the first film, the villainous guinea pig Professor Marmalade, voiced by Richard Ayoade, is also back. Now sporting tattoos and a more menacing presence in his maximum-security prison, he still retains his comically nasally tone.
This time around, the film brims with wit and energy, coupled with a genuinely heartwarming message about friendship. Even the obligatory fart joke feels elevated and prompts laughter from the adults in the audience. However, my reviewing partner—who enthusiastically rated the original film a whopping 10 out of 5 stars when she was just five—was less impressed this time, simply stating, “It was OK.” So, perhaps I’m not the best judge here!
The Bad Guys 2 hits theaters on July 25 in the UK, August 1 in the US, and September 18 in Australia.
