The Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Singapore hosts the captivating exhibition “Zheng Lu: The Dry Riverbed Finds No Thanks For Its Past” by Beijing-based artist Zheng Lu. Running from May 24 to July 26, 2025, this exhibition showcases the artist’s new work, Tide Crossing, inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s poetry, alongside recent sculptures from his acclaimed Water in Dripping series.
Zheng Lu is renowned for his technically ambitious sculptures, often centered on the theme of water, drawing conceptual inspiration from poetry and traditional Chinese philosophy. The exhibition’s title, borrowed from Tagore’s Stray Birds collection, nods to the transient nature of existence that informs the Tide Crossing series. These sculptures capture the fluid form of moving water while featuring tactile, sand-like surfaces reminiscent of a dry riverbed. The works invite reflection on the value of life, embracing the moment, looking to the future, and respecting nature.
The Water in Dripping sculptures, crafted from stainless steel, evoke water splashes frozen in midair, with some pieces incorporating thousands of Chinese characters as pictorial elements. The exhibition highlights Zheng Lu’s ability to blend Chinese philosophy and natural elements with material exploration, transforming water into poetic expressions of the relationship between humanity and the natural world.
