When you cross the threshold of an art museum, an unwritten rulebook involuntarily comes to life in your mind. Heavy stone sculptures of antiquity occupy the ground floor with gravity, while the Impressionists shimmer in their own illuminated rooms; meanwhile, contemporary art gazes back at us from the sheltered distance of sterile white cubes. This hidden hierarchy, where time periods are cut cleanly from one another and mediums are confined to their own boundaries, is one of the most deep-rooted preconceptions in the history of museology. Yet, Karl Ernst Osthaus, the founder of Museum Folkwang in Essen, waged a radical war against this institutional caste system as early as 1902. Wrenching art from being mere chronological documentation, he conceptualized it as a dynamic arena of encounter where eras and traditions multiply, bend, and even sabotage each other’s voices.
Osthaus’s century-old legacy has today transformed into a living, organic organism at the heart of the museum under the title “Neue Welten – Dialog der Künste” (New Worlds – Dialogue of the Arts). This layered collection presentation—which artificial intelligence or rigid curatorial algorithms could never replicate—has been continuously renewing itself since June 21, 2019, and continues to captivate audiences across a broad span of time extending until December 30, 2026.
