Chamber music is an intimate space where instruments look into each other’s eyes and converse away from the flashy noise of giant orchestras, with the audience sitting right at the heart of that conversation. Süreyya Opera House in Kadıköy opens its doors to this direct, sincere, and pure acoustic realm with the 6th Istanbul International Chamber Music Festival, taking place between September 6 and 24, 2026.
Curated under the artistic direction of Nil Kocamangil, the festival offers a flow that focuses on how sounds on stage blend into one another rather than marketing hype. The program kicks off on the evening of September 6 with an opening concert where the quintet consisting of Fedor Rudin, Alexandra Soumm, Máté Szűcs, Lydia Shelley, and Julien Libeer shares the same stage in Turkey for the very first time; it then stretches from sa.ne.na’s rhythmic explorations on percussion to the wind tones of Anatolian Clarinet Connection. In the “Festival Gathering” on September 11, masterpieces of string literature will resonate off Süreyya’s stone acoustics from the hands of master names including Marc Coppey, Razvan Popovici, and Emmanuel Coppey.
One of the festival’s most organic veins is that quiet transmission between generations. Under the title “Young Stars of the Festival,” young musicians Deniz Yakın, Beliz Güney, and Çağatay Yurt will leave sounds upon the same canvas alongside master figures such as Miguel Da Silva and Caspar Frantz. While the pre-concert “Off-The-Record” talks open a door to the artists’ sonic worlds beyond classical music, free masterclasses led by Carolin Widmann, Marc Coppey, and Razvan Popovici will transform Süreyya’s daytime atmosphere into a space for learning and sharing.
Concluding on the night of September 24 with a colorful finale by the two-time Echo Klassik award-winning Alliage Quintett, this gathering offers a breathing space for those wishing to take refuge in music’s simplest, most human side amid Istanbul’s September rhythm.
