The UK debut of Sean Daniels’ critically acclaimed play The White Chip will take place at Southwark Playhouse Borough this summer, with performances scheduled from July 9 to August 16, 2025. The press night is set for Friday, July 11 at 7 PM.
Produced by Danielle Tarento (of Titanic fame) and Tony Award-winning actress Annaleigh Ashford, this production marks the first London staging of Daniels’ autobiographical comedy centered on addiction and recovery. Originally premiering at 59E59 Theaters in New York, the show later moved to MCC Theater, receiving widespread acclaim and being featured as a New York Times Critics’ Pick.
Ed Coleman, known for his work in I Am Hannah and 28 Weeks Later, stars as Steven McAlister, a celebrated theatre director whose meticulously managed double life begins to unravel due to his struggles with alcohol. Despite his professional accolades and personal achievements, Steven’s dependence on alcohol jeopardizes all he has worked for—until a white chip from an AA meeting catalyzes a pivotal change.
Joining Coleman are Mara Allen (Macbeth at Shakespeare’s Globe; King Lear on the West End/Broadway) and Ashlee Irish (Hello, Dolly! at London Palladium; Dreamgirls at Savoy Theatre), who will portray various characters that guide, challenge, and mirror Steven’s journey.
Directed by Matt Ryan, the creative team features designer Lee Newby, lighting by Jamie Platt, sound by Max Pappenheim, and casting by Danielle Tarento.
Playwright Sean Daniels expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “After the overwhelming response in New York—where audiences found humor and, more importantly, courage to seek help—it’s an honor to bring The White Chip to London. This play is about survival, and I’m fortunate to collaborate with people who resonate with its humor and heart.”
