The exhibition draws its narrative foundation from a powerful and quiet line by one of the master figures of our literature, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar: “People can sometimes be reflections of things they are not even aware of.” This philosophical starting point suggests that the works in the exhibition not only reflect who we are but also transform into a force that shapes us—and even resists us.
As curator Thom Oosterhof also emphasizes, each work in the exhibition begins with a personal experience or an intuitive reaction; however, as creation progresses, the works gain an existence of their own. These pieces, which resist and redirect the artist’s initial intention, ultimately become the artist’s collaborators. This subtle shift from control to dialogue forms the essence of the exhibition.
The inclusion of material practices such as painting, sculpture, and tapestry in the exhibition is no coincidence. These materials—pigment layering, the texture of threads, or form shaping—are treated as co-authors that influence the artist and can interrupt the process. The artist is no longer a solitary creator; they are part of an evolving dialogue.
The works in this exhibition are witnesses to moments in flux; they are records of encounters between the self and the act of production. As visitors leave Galeri Bosfor, they are invited to carry with them these questions: “What happens when a work begins to shape its creator?” and “If the creative process is not merely a form of expression—but also a formative experience?”
