Oliver Mears’ Boldly Satirical Production of Semele Makes UK Debut

May 27, 20252 min read

Oliver Mears’ strikingly dark and satirical interpretation of Handel’s Semele is set to make its UK debut at Covent Garden. Following a triumphant run at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris (February 2025), this production opens on the Main Stage on Monday, June 30 – marking only the second time this piece has been staged in Covent Garden since its world premiere in 1744.

The talented Pretty Yende takes on the title role, joined by Ben Bliss, who is making his Royal Opera debut as Jupiter, Semele’s alluring yet treacherous love interest. Together, they will perform some of Handel’s most beloved pieces, including “Where’er you walk,” “Endless pleasure,” and “Myself I shall adore.”

The cast also features the critically acclaimed Alice Coote as Juno, Bindley Sherratt as Cadmus/Somnus, and Carlo Vistoli, who is also making his debut with the company as Athamas. Niamh O’Sullivan plays Ino, and Parker Artist Maranana Hovanini takes on the role of Iris. The Royal House Orchestra and the Royal Opera Chorus will be conducted by Baroque music specialist Christian Curnyn.

The creative team includes Set and Costume Designer Annemarie Woods, who presents the story within Jupiter’s lavish art-deco residence, alongside Lighting Designer Fabiana Piccioli and Movement Director Sarah Fahie.

Semele is the latest addition to The Royal Opera’s series of Handel’s works at Covent Garden, which has previously featured Susanna, Berenice, the Olivier Award-winning Alcina, as well as Jephtha and Theodora. In the upcoming 2025/26 Season, Joe Hill-Gibbins and Jetske Mijnssen will make their Royal Opera directing debuts, continuing this series with Giustino in the Linbury Theatre (October 7–18) and Ariodante on the Main Stage (December 9–21), respectively.
