Ethel Cain Explores High School Struggles in Ethereal New Single ‘Fuck Me Eyes’

July 6, 20253 min read

Ethel Cain has unveiled her latest single, ‘Fuck Me Eyes’, further delving into the theme of high school anxieties.

This song serves as the second release from her anticipated album, ‘Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You,’ set to drop on August 8. To get ready for its release, fans can pre-save or pre-order the album here.

“‘Fuck Me Eyes’ continues the exploration of high school anxieties and is also a nod to one of my favorite pop tracks, ‘Bette Davis Eyes,’” Ethel explains. “It’s an ode to the seemingly perfect girl who everyone admires yet labels as the town ‘slut’—the beautiful blonde who feels lonely and just wants to be loved, constantly judged by adults, while she’s the one everyone simultaneously envies and dismisses. I first wrote the beginning of this song five years ago, making it the oldest demo on the record. As the story developed, it became clear how relevant it was for the album. This track embodies my complicated feelings for the girl I believe has caught my crush’s attention, as well as my perspectives at 16.”

Recently, she released the first single, ‘Nettles’, from the upcoming album, which features synthesizers sourced from a composer associated with Twin Peaks.

In addition to her vocals and banjo play, Cain contributes on synthesizers, piano, electric, acoustic, and bass guitars to the track. It’s also a tribute to the late director David Lynch’s iconic series Twin Peaks. On one of her artistic platforms, Cain noted that elements of ‘Nettles’ were inspired by Twin Peaks, as she sought out the very synthesizers used to record the show’s renowned theme. These synthesizers will likely appear throughout the upcoming album.

After the album’s launch, Cain is gearing up for a tour that promises to be her biggest yet. She will perform at venues including London’s Eventim Apollo, Paris’ L’Olympia, New York’s Radio City Music Hall, Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium, and Berkeley’s Greek Theater.

The U.S. leg of the tour kicks off in August, followed by the U.K. shows in October. Tickets are available for the UK here and the US here.

Cain’s previous project, ‘Perverts,’ received a four-star review from NME, which remarked, “While casual listeners may find it challenging, those willing to embrace its discomfort will discover hidden depths—much like how eyes adjust to low light.”

In April, Cain made history by becoming the first openly trans artist to achieve a top 10 album in the US with her acclaimed debut, Preacher’s Daughter, nearly three years after its initial release in May 2022.
