A day filled with art in the heart of New York: Columbia University School of the Arts will host the MFA Visual Arts + Sound Art Open Studios event on Sunday, November 16. On this special day, visitors will have the opportunity to tour the graduate studios, meet emerging artists, and get a close look at their creative processes.
The event consists of two main sections:
The event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration (RSVP) is recommended.
Columbia University’s Visual Arts + Sound Art MFA program offers participants opportunities for experimental production, interdisciplinary thinking, and deep engagement with contemporary art theory. Students work with an international faculty of artists and produce work in direct contact with New York’s museums, galleries, and independent art spaces.
This two-year interdisciplinary MFA program brings together artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, moving image, and expanded practices. The program empowers students not only in individual creation but also in critical dialogue and curatorial collaboration.
Run in collaboration with the Columbia Music Department and Computer Music Center, the Sound Art program addresses artists working at the intersection of sound, sculpture, new media, and performance. The discipline emphasizes that sound is not merely an auditory experience but also a spatial, visual, and conceptual tool.
Applications for the fall 2026 term are open until January 20, 2026.
Columbia School of the Arts is more than an educational institution—it is a creative hub shaping the futures of artists from around the world.
With its programs in film, theater, writing, visual arts, and sound art, it stands as one of the most dynamic platforms for contemporary art production.
These open studio days filled with artists during New York’s fall season offer a window not only to discover future names but also to see the directions in which contemporary art is evolving. This year’s Columbia open studios invite us to redefine the boundaries of sound and visuals together.
