In “Blacked-Out Blocks,” novelist Philo enters the daunting task of adapting her own book into a series, only to find herself battling to retain its essence. Each line removed from her script signifies a new compromise—these “blacked-out blocks” evolve from mere omissions into commodities. As her producer transforms redactions into a branding strategy, even the act of rebellion becomes a part of the marketing narrative.
Set in a rehearsal space where dialogue is a currency and power dynamics shift with each scene change, this darkly humorous and innovative piece deconstructs the process of theatrical creation in real time. As the script evolves in front of the audience, characters spiral into self-reflection, half-truths, and acts of self-sabotage.
Through a unique blend of rapid dialogue, physical disruption, and shattered fourth walls, “Blacked-Out Blocks” delves into how creative ownership is gradually undermined—not just through censorship, but also by the very systems that claim to uplift art while profiting from its deterioration.
Produced by Nomereach Theatre, this piece does not culminate in triumph or clarity. Rather, it poses a poignant question wrapped in silence: When protest morphs into performance, who truly emerges victorious?
