After receiving a five-star rating and multiple awards during its world premiere, the new musical Hot Mess is ready to debut in London at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant from October 16 to November 8, 2025. Critics have hailed it as “blazing” and “ingenious,” uniquely transforming the climate crisis into a heartfelt romantic comedy.
Created by the talented duo Jack Godfrey and Ellie Coote, known for their hit musical 42 Balloons, Hot Mess explores the tumultuous relationship between Earth and Humanity. Starring Tobias Turley and Danielle Steers in lead roles, their performances have garnered widespread acclaim.
The production has already made waves, winning five major awards, including the prestigious Fringe First for outstanding new writing, the Popcorn Writing Award 2025, and the New Musical Theatre Award from Musical Theatre Review. It was also featured in The Stage’s Fringe Five, solidifying its reputation as a standout piece of theatre.
Hot Mess is the inaugural production from the New Musical Theatre Department at Birmingham Hippodrome, and its success highlights the department’s commitment to nurturing bold and original narratives. Deirdre O’Halloran, the head of the department, remarked that the show’s impact demonstrates “audiences are eager for daring and innovative stories that address the pressing issues of our time.”
With its original concept and a slew of critical praise, Hot Mess is poised to be a must-see for theatre lovers in London this autumn.
