For those pursuing a career in art history, a new opportunity removes financial barriers while combining academic rigor with practical experience. The University of Arkansas School of Art’s Master of Arts (MA) in Art History program provides tuition-free education and direct collaboration with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
This two-year, residential program integrates scholarly research with hands-on museum experience, preparing students for careers in art history, museums, and cultural institutions. Its greatest strength lies in its close ties to the museum and access to nearby art centers like Tulsa and St. Louis, embedding students in a vibrant art ecosystem. Program director Jennifer Greenhill notes that student research “focuses on telling new stories about overlooked art practices and understudied artists,” thereby reshaping the field.
From Curatorship to Global Travel
The curriculum revolves around themes such as identity, environment, heritage, and power, addressing critical issues in understanding American art. Before graduation, students gain real-world experience through internships at national institutions like Crystal Bridges, Art Bridges, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
Program graduates demonstrate its impact. For instance, alum Ibby Ouweleen conducted research on Rashid Johnson’s works during her internship, contributing to the development of two exhibitions, and upon graduation secured a full-time position as a curatorial specialist at the Art Bridges Foundation.
Travel is a key component of the program. Students participate in faculty-led trips to places like Barcelona, Madrid, Accra, and Tamale in Ghana. Mexico City and cities in Alabama are planned for future programs. Thanks to a transformative gift from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation, all admitted students receive full financial support for two years—including travel, conference attendance, and independent research. This unique opportunity allows students to focus entirely on their academic passions without financial worry.
