The Piano Melody of Memory: Tarik Kiswanson’s Art of Trauma and Renewal in Paris

November 1, 20251 min read

Artist Tarik Kiswanson explores the themes of memory, trauma, and rebirth through new sculptures and videos in his exhibition “The Relief” at the Institut suédois. This exhibition holds great significance as his first solo presentation in France.

In his works, Kiswanson asks how the dark moments of our collective history shape the present: How do we endure trauma and succeed in rebuilding? These existential questions lie at the center of the artist’s practice. His art, much like the low notes of a piano, not only records pain but also reflects the effort to extract a new order from melancholy.

The artist deliberately blurs the lines between architecture and artwork in his exhibitions, disrupting the viewer’s perception of space. By bringing together forms, materials, and expressions, he depicts transitional states. This is a hopeful mode of expression that shows how the weight of the past can be transformed into a transformative space (The Relief) in the present. Most of the works in the exhibition have been specially produced for this show, and all are being presented in France for the first time.
