Tim Minchin’s life took a pivotal turn 20 years ago at the Edinburgh Fringe, and tonight he commemorates that milestone with a showcase of 20 songs. There’s much to celebrate; few artists have such a distinct and successful career. You can feel that Minchin is exactly where he wants to be. Accompanied by a five-member band, he strikes a perfect balance between troubadour and rockstar, embracing his reputation as a misfit. Who cares if he’s a musician, comedian, auteur, or clown? As he cheekily puts it, tonight’s performance is “an absolute shitshow of tonal inconsistency.”
And he’s not wrong. Minchin’s unique blend of cool and uncool mixes rock theatrics with a playful self-awareness. For more than three hours, his vibrant personality lights up the stage.
None of the songs are left to stand alone; each is accompanied by stories from his life, providing context and depth. One piece, “Song of the Masochist,” was written for his brother to help him heal from a breakup. Another, “Apart Together,” evokes touching memories of his father and recently deceased mother.
The setlist offers a balanced mix of comedic and serious songs. Standout moments include a rousing performance of “Revolting Children” from Matilda, complete with a fiery electric guitar solo by bandmate Jak Housden. There’s also a poignant new song that resonates with anyone reflecting on life as they hit a milestone birthday. Yet, some moments, like his “I love boobs” anthem, “Confessions,” can feel awkward, especially when the entire band is roped into the performance.
But that’s quintessential Minchin, whose guiding principle is unabashed honesty. This unwavering authenticity creates a warm atmosphere, as he shares his joy of being where he is at this moment, inviting us all to celebrate with him.
