Hailing from the Podlasie region in eastern Poland—one of the last remnants of that old, multicultural structure—Olga Anna Markowska constructs her music as a space for healing. The traumas left behind by Poland’s turbulent history, shaped by Nazi occupation, Soviet oppression, and communist rule, emerge in Markowska’s music as melancholic afterimages.
Markowska, who is also a visual artist and plays in Wesołowski’s band, completed her debut album, ISKRA, over a five-year period. Nourished by her childhood memories in the Białowieża Forest, the album brings the sepia-toned sadness of history into the present through ambient structures, piano, and qanun scores.
