“The Self Assessed” Exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler

Every time we look in the mirror, is what we see truly ourselves, or is it a flawless mask tailored onto us by society, desires, and time? One of Berlin’s most deep-rooted art sanctuaries, Galerie Max Hetzler, invites us to shatter the comfortable illusion of mirrors and step onto the uncanny stage behind our faces. Blending a decade of editorial experience with a refined vision, curator Cornelius Tittel delivers a literal self-portrait feast in the exhibition “The Self Assessed.” The exhibition argues that the human face is never a neutral or innocent void; rather, it is a high-tension battlefield where societal norms and artistic will relentlessly collide.

This polyphonic space of confrontation offers a tremendous historical and contemporary perspective stretching from the dawn of modern art to the speculative aesthetics of today. Paula Modersohn-Becker’s self-portraits, bearing the uncompromising assertion and courage of early modernism, are positioned in the exhibition as the first radical declarations of identity. Right after come Cindy Sherman’s famous works, where she deconstructs societal roles by transforming her own face into an entirely mutable, fluid, and uncanny surface. On the other end of the frame, a magnificent dialogue of contrasts dominates: while Jeff Koons objectifies narcissism by melting its peaks onto shiny, smooth, and flawless surfaces, Tracey Emin, in complete opposition, does not hesitate to completely expose herself in her most vulnerable, raw, and wounded state. Through these contrasts, we read how the slippery concept of what we call the “self” is actually a plastic fiction that constantly eludes us and is rebuilt at every moment through art.

Tittel completely detaches the genre of the self-portrait from its familiar, naive function of being a mere mirror, reimagining it as a psychological analysis and a radical staging experiment. Walking through the gallery corridors, we actually confront our own hidden strangeness in the glances looking out at us from within the paintings. That foreign eye behind the canvas flings us into our own internal corridors, allowing us to find ourselves once again within that alienated gaze. Undoubtedly one of the most prestigious and intellectually dense exhibitions of this year, 2026, this selection functions as a jarring laboratory that measures how honestly we can look at ourselves before turning our faces to the world.

Do you think an artist making their own self-portrait opens up the most intimate depths of their soul to us, or do they merely fling a narcissistic mirror back in our faces for us to reflect upon while looking at them, as seen in Koons’s smooth surfaces?

The exhibition is open for visitors until May 30.
